Expired Foods

Wow. This is serious. Be careful.

At first I thought this couldn't possibly be true. But after further examination, the story looks legit. Please be careful if you are working with hot foods.

Careful When Shopping

There's nothing wrong with getting duped into buying one extra of something as long as it saves you money and you're going to use it... But, when it actually costs MORE to buy in bulk, you are being ripped off. I've seen this posted a handful of times, but always gave the store the benefit of the doubt as just making an error.

After reading some of the posts on The Consumerist, it seems like a little too much of a pattern at two particular retail giants.

Lack O' Nutritional Value

This is amazing. Similar to what can be seen on Super Size Me, this teached kept a burger from 1996 (we'll say allegedly just for legal sakes), from McDonalds. From the pics, it hasn't changed one bit in over 10 years.

Swamp Rat or Tasty Treat?

Imagine a 20+ pound swamp rat of sorts that is listed with the La. Game Commission as a red meat, but one that tastes more like fowl. It's become somewhat of a destroyer of swamplands in Louisiana. Strangely, it's name sounds like a nutritious treat...

It's So Good and Sweet This Fish Is Called "Candy"

This salmon travels further to spawn, according to the site, than any other, up to 2,300 miles! Once caught it is brined in salt and organic brown sugar, and smoked using natural alder wood for a taste and texture comparable to candy (?). Wow.

Giant Waterbugs

Instead of us trying to write our own witty take on this, here's Neatorama's:
"These large and powerful insects are as adept at swimming as they are at flying. Eaten as a delicacy and found in Thai and Chinese markets, these insects bear the nickname toe-biters and are capable of inflicting a painful stab with their sharpened front beak. These bugs feed on other aquatic insects, tadpoles and even small fish, injecting them with a powerful toxin and digestive juice that allows the bug to suck up the contents at will. They are also known for their snorkel-like breathing tubes at the end of their abdomen.

Another Day, Another Story About Coffee's 'Truth'

It would take a catastrophic finding to stop me from my morning coffee. For one thing, I've now found myself suffering from caffeine withdrawl (nasty headaches and such) if I don't have my morning tankard of java. But with everything else, here's the article, take from it what you will.

Top 100 things To CONSIDER Eating Before You Die

I might change the title of this article to "100 Things You Might Think About Trying, But Could Be Crazy For Actually Ingesting Before You Die". For instance, take #75, the scotch bonnet pepper. Dan at foodproof.com suggests that this is a top 100 thing to try before you die. If you try this however, you might not make it to read #74. The Scotch Bonnet Pepper (see above pic), will burn you innards by just you looking at it...  Interesting list though, check out all 100...

Fortune Cookies, Not So Chinese

Here's a great NY Times blog entry dispelling the (possible) myth of fortune cookies being a part of actual Chinese cuisine. We're amazed by the total mysterious looks the people were giving when asked to try one.

Animals Like Good Alcohol Too

We usually stick to just stories and info about food, but this one caught our eye...

Imagine an animal that does the following, "The pen-tailed tree shrew feeds on nectar of a plant called bertam palm, which is also the primary food source for many other animals. Yeast cells in the palm's flowers ferment its nectar. Alcohol content can be as much as 3.8%. Among living plants this has the highest concentration of alcohol.

What is interesting is that this little schrew can handle his alcohol surpassing the legal intoxication limit of 1.4 grams of alcohol per kg of body mass every 3 days. In human terms this is equivalent to an average woman drinking nine glasses of wine or beer in a 12 hour period." - From allvoices.com

To break it down, this schrew is tanked off of naturally fermented brew all the time.
