Food Failure - Fizzies
Published by Expired Foods on 8.08.2008 at 1:37 PM.

A sugar-free effervescing candy, kinda reminding us of Alka Seltzer, called Fizzies became very popular in the 50's and 60's, but had to be removed from store shelves by 1970. Turns out that FDA research found that artificial sweeteners called cyclamates, used in the making of Fizzies, can cause certain varieties of cancer. At this point many food makers at that time decided to search for alternatives. Unfortunately (or fortunately), the Fizzies would not work with other artificial sweeteners out there, so shortly after the ban on cyclamates went into effect, Fizzies became history.
But wait, "I'm not dead yet", said the Fizzies. Forward to 2008. Fizzies are now being offered again at Fizzies.com. I scoured the website, but couldn't find a listing of ingredients for the 'new' version.
